How to Record Vocals at Home: The Essential Setup Guide for New Artists
Recording vocals at home has never been more accessible. With the right setup and technique, you can get a professional-sounding vocal without spending thousands of dollars on studio time. Here is what you need and how to do it right.
The Minimum Gear You Need
You need a microphone (condenser or dynamic — see our other article), an audio interface to connect the mic to your computer, and a DAW to record into. A basic but solid setup: the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (audio interface, around $120), a microphone like the AT2020 or SM7B, a mic stand, and an XLR cable. Total investment: $300-500, and you are set up to record professionally.
Treating Your Room
Your room’s acoustics will have more impact on your vocal sound than your microphone. Hard surfaces like bare walls, tile floors, and windows cause reflections (echo) that will make your recording sound amateur. To reduce this, record in a small room with soft surfaces. Hang moving blankets or thick curtains around your recording area. Position yourself in a corner of the room. Recording inside a closet full of hanging clothes is surprisingly effective and free. The clothes absorb reflections naturally.
Recording Technique Tips
Keep a consistent distance from the mic — about 6 to 12 inches is ideal. Use a pop filter to reduce plosive sounds (the P and B sounds that cause low rumbles). Record at a level where the loudest parts hit around -12 to -6 dB in your DAW — this gives you headroom to work with. Always record to a click track. Never use the built-in mic on your laptop for actual music recordings. And drink warm water, not cold, before recording.
